James was born in Moorhead, Minnesota and was inducted into
the U.S. Army on August 23, 1946 at the age of 18.
After basic training, James was assigned to the famed 82nd.
Airborne Division. He was specifically in the service company of the 505th
Parachute Infantry Regiment. His job was that of an airplane and engine mechanic
on the L-4 and L-5 observation and liaison aircraft.
James served at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina and Fort Jackson,
South Carolina.
At his discharge from the military in February, 1948 James
had been awarded the WWII Victory medal and had attained the rank of Corporal.
