On December 7, 1941 Miriam was attending Ohio Wesleyan
College in Delaware. Miriam enlisted into the U.S. Army on October 23, 1944.
During her wartime experience, Miriam taught combat amputees
to learn how to drive cars using hand controls and also how to use their prosthetics
in everyday life.
Her experience doing this work as a 1st. Lieutenant
made her realize how important it was to help people with handicaps to be as
normal as possible.
Miriam was discharged on June 28, 1947.
