James had always loved the water. This was one of the
reasons that he decided to enlist in the U.S. Navy at the age of 17. This was
on July 27, 1944.
After basic training James was assigned to the job as a second
loader of a 40 mm antiaircraft gun on a landing craft support vessel.
He served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater of operations. He
was discharged with the rank of Coxswain on September 2, 1946.
James was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific medal with one star,
and the Philippine Campaign medal.
