James was drafted into the U.S. Army Air Forces on October
3, 1943 at the age of 19.
After he left basic training, James was sent overseas to the
Pacific Theater of operations. He was assigned to the 2018th
Aircraft ordinance and maintenance group on the island of Okinawa.
As an E-4 during this time, James was responsible for the
storage and maintenance of bombs, guns and ammunition.
James was discharged from the AAF’s on January 19, 1946 and
was awarded 3 medals, one of which was the good conduct medal.
